  • It is not just your dog. Remember that it will share the home with your other family members. So, ask for your family's approval first and foremost.
  • Now decide the type of breed you want tpo keep in your home. This will depend upon a number of factors such as the size of your house, the time you will have for taking care of your dog, whether you are allergic to dogs, what is your personal preferance etc.
  • Now, it's time to get in touch with a recognised breeder. Ask for his advice as well and finally decide upon the breed you want to take.
  • Choose a health looking, outgoing puppy among the group.
  • Do not take any puppy who is younger than 6 - 8 weeks old away from his mother.
  • Make sure that the puppy will be able to manage without her mother.
  • Now choose a short and sweet name for your pup.
  • Make a soft, sozy bed for your puppy. You can use your old blankets and quilts so that it is warm.
  • Keep his bed in a quite area, not at a place where people would be walking and talking all the time.
  • Spread newspaper around his bedding.
  • Place a low low heighted clean bowl half filled with water for him to drink.
  • Give him a toy of his own which she can chew once her teeth starts coming.
  • A young puppy will sleep most of the times, do not disturb him in his sleep.
  • If you have any other pets in the house introduce them to your new puppy gradually and always under supervision.
  • Till your puppy is six months old, you should ideally feed him four times a day.
  • Your puppy will require his vaccines for the first time when he is 8 weeks old and then again when he is 12 weeks old.
  • Do not let her interact with other dogs for atleast 15 days after he is vaccinated.
  • Try to toilet train your dog from as early as you can.
  • Take him out for toilet at regular intervals, in the morning, after his meal, before sleeping.
  • When he is a few weeks old, train him to get used to his collar and chain. Tie him up when he goes out on walks, but not too tightly.
  • Train him to follow simple commands like stand, sit, run etc but do not punish him if he does not follow it.
  • Get him vaccinated as regular intervals and take him for regular visits to your vet.
  • Keep him healthy as your family's health will also be adversely affected if your puppy falls sick.
  • Make him do simple exercises like running, jumping etc.
